Default Youth Quad Size

I am looking to get my son into racing, I am wondering about size, cc ect. He has some experence on motorcycles but not really quads. I would like to buy him something he could get a few years out of without purchasing a machine he'll out grow in six months. I've looked at the apex mx100 and Xtreme Typhoon 125. As of right now he's about 5'2" tall and 13 years old. He's going to be tall (I'm 6'4"), I just would like to make sure he'll have some growing room, or at least room to move around on the machine. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello,

As far as engine size, you need to call around to your local tracks and see what type of quad classes they offer. It could be tricky (depending where you live) because he is at an awkward age. He is almost too big for the mini quad class and not old enough to be in the full size quad class (you have to be 16yrs old to race full size.) Some places offer an "in between" class. If there is a class like that in your area, consider purchasing a Blaster. If your local tracks don't offer an "in between" class, then you will have to be in the mini-quad (90cc) class. From there it becomes tough. Because your son is tall, he may have a hard time fitting on a 90cc quad. Take him in and have him sit on different brand quads. Make sure he has plenty of leg room!

I do notice that some of the taller riders (in the 90cc class) ride the Honda TRX 90. They have a lot more leg room than some of the other 90cc quads. The disadvantage to the Honda is that the 4-strokes have a tougher time competing against the 2-strokes. Now, there are modifications that can be done to make it more competitive, but then you are investing more$$$. (for info on great aftermarket mini quad parts I recommend www.hetrickracing.com)

Also, if you are racing, try to stay away from off-brand quads. Quads take a beating during races. You want to make sure you have a well-built machine!

I am sure you will get more recommendations. I hope I was helpful. Good luck!

Look at the Polaris Phoenix. It is a good size for teens.

Like some1 said check with your racing league. The xtreme typhoon won't be ready till june. It won't be ama legal for this year. So if your racing ama that leaves that 1 out.

What type of racing will you all be doing? We race XC and some TT ,circle track, and mx. We love our 06 Honda. My son is only 8 and he can race it in an ama event. So your child will be fine there.

Now on the Typhoon. My buddy and I are looking to get 2 of these to build for XC racing. I think these quads are a very good machine. I like the Honda engine. The 125 is a kick start and the 90 is electric start. The weight is the best thing about this quad it's lite as a feather. I can't wait to add this quad to his quad list.. The Honda can be built to run fast if you knbow what your doing. But if you can't do it all yourself it will cost alot of $$$$$.

At 13 (and that big) I would hesitate buying him a mini.
IMO a 300ex may be the correct choice and no money wasted as he can ride that forever. At 14 he can race it in ATVA/AMA santioned events.
The Phoenix is a great machine, but no racer.

I agree with Lt80. Last year I got a Blaster( basically the same as a 300ex) for my son to learn a little with, he was barely 10 yrs. old. He had been riding and racing some already so he had some experience and some sense to know not to over do it with the power. If your son has no expeience, you might want to get a used quad and see how he does first.
