First, let me apologize for hijacking your thread about alternate safety equipment.
Second, I don't look any stranger than the obviously more experienced riders wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and a helmet.
Third, if you want to dress your kids in anything, it's no one else's business, least of all mine.
Lastly, I bow to your superior safety experience and posting ability, dude.
BTW (that's an abbreviation for 'by the way'), I was asking what a Pro Rider forum poster like You wear, not ss97.
He readily explained why he wears that silly, unnecessary, and uncool looking safety equipment.

Setting the standard for the masses...lol
Seriuosly, I didn't mean to tick you off, but where I ride there is usually a lot of quad and dirt bike traffic. I know of several people who have been t-boned while wearing what I call casual clothes(shorts and a t-shirt). They weren't hurt 'hospital' serious, but were banged up pretty good. Good riding gear will save you from those 'damn that's gonna leave a mark' incidents.
Fortunately my 'space suit' is under my jersey, so the laughter isn't a loud as you might think.
(It does lok spacey without a jersey over it, but way more comfortable than a roost deflector, at least for me)
Casual riding, does that mean slow trails, jetting around your property? I'm going on trails with elevation changes, fast stretches, whoops, jumps, and I personally feel a lot better with protection, jersey, boots, etc.
The last time I went for a quick look around before getting dressed out, I flipped my quad which chose to insult me further by rolling over me and dislocating my collarbone and cracking two ribs.
Now I dress for the crash, not for the ride. Someone on this forum told me that one...
Again, it is nobody else's business what you feel is appropriate for your kid's safety.

appreciate it.... I'm still going to ride naked though..... Anyway I wasnt ticked off... I just dont get why you think that we ride with shorts and a T-shirt. there isnt anything in my pryor post suggesting that we do... I'm all about protection... Polaris helmet, 661 neckroll and chest protector, fox jersey, thor pants and boots and smith googles... I was just wondering if anybody used the football chest protector... They had a bunch of really neat ones on sale last weekend and I thought hhmmmm that would even MORE protection... Later...

Just thought I would reply to the first question of type of chest gaurd worn. We have worn hockey chest protectors for my kids when they first started riding, not as rugged as football chest protectors but worked quite well, they are still using the hockey elbow and shin pads . We don't ride to hard or race.
The kids are 11 and 9 now and the only bad habit They have because of me is that they wear sun glasses( safety glasses. free from work) instead of goggles.

watzupdog,
I guess I misunderstood your tone, because I do see a lot of people here on the left coast, that think they are safe because they own a helmet. Some have told me they could never enjoy riding with 'all that crap on'. It kinda 'peeves' me, because I see their 12-15 yo kids dressing the same way. Just the cranky old man in me peeking out, I guess.
Actually, I can see what you and fixit can see in trying alternate protection, especially for younger kids. They are hard to fit and are more vulnerable to the totally unexpected. Come to think of it, that's what I am most vulnerable to!
I'm older and trying to get my last son grown and gone (hope he doesn't read this). I tend to forget what having younger kids is like. Be safe...and have fun!

It just boils down to common sense. I have my son in full gear when he rides. All the way down to those expensive a## ONEAL racing boots that he will grow out of in a year. Is football/hockey the proper gear? No, but at least you attempted to protect your daughters and sons . I have seen many kids with no type of helmet or gear on riding. That is dumb!!! I guess what Im tring to say is "something is better than nothing" Oh, my son is 5. He wears a Vega helmet w/Thor roost . I run with the HJC helmet w/EVS LITE. Something is better than nothing!!!

T-Boned with another quad or bike is going to leave a mark somewhere no matter what you wear.
My kid wears all the stuff we got at the dealer...I have worn the roost protectors and even did some jousting with a tree branch once with my O'Neil vest...tossed me off the machine too. Saved me from a cut and possible bruised rib. Vest got screwed though. So they work for more than just rocks.
