That is the way I would go too. 50cc, let your kid putt around on it for a year or so. You will have a much better idea of skill, aptitude for riding, as well as get an idea what the physical size of machine needs to be. Most 5 y/o are really to small to effectively manipulate a 90cc mini if they get into trouble.
