Starter turns wrong direction HELP
#1
Working on this little chinese motor, just installed a starter (purchased motor without starter). Put 12 volts to the solenoide, started spins fine, only problem, it turn the wrong way to start the engine. (starter spins clockwise looking at the drive gear) Contacted the suppliers who sold me the starter, they were no help. They didn't know which way the starter turns, and could care less. Have tried to contact several other suppliers with the same results. Any body know anything about these motors and how I can resolve the problem. I would include pictures, but I can't figure out how to do that. Thanks for your time.

What size and type is your engine?
I do know that the starter for the 200cc engines turn the opposite direction compared to the starter for the 250cc engines on the Zongshen and Lifan type chinese engines.
There was a thread a while back for this very same problem. The individual was sent the starter for a 200cc engine when he needed the starter for a 250cc engine.
The starters look identical and bolt right up to either engine but are not compatible one with the other. One starter turns clockwise and the other turns counterclockwise.

THANKS FOR THE RESPONCE. I just received a email from a supplier who has a starter that turns in the opposite direction from mine, so I would assume that I have the same situation as you described. . Hope the new starter solves my problem.

hondatrx 250 - replaced brushes in starter - now it spins opposite direction. Kickstart throws correct direction. Only one way to fit that starter back together,so no way to mess that up. Battery good. Solenoid good -can hook up either way on Honda. Switches ok throughout system.
Bench test of starter is fine. Continuity where it should be and not where it shouldn't. What? What?

So when you bench tested the starter it spun the right direction? The when you put it in the quad it spun backwards? That doubly suggests the battery is hooked up backwards.

Wow. I would have never thought of that. I'm not sure if what he did is possible on a lot of quads (swapping the starter motor stator [the outer case] end for end) , but it is good to keep in mind just in case it can happen.
This kind of thing would confuse even the best...
