LT80 Rolling?
#1
I just bought my kids their first quad an 03 LT80. I am new to these machines and was hoping for some help. It seems stock and maintained fairly well. The first issue I am having is that after the brake is released on flat ground the atv starts rolling and picking up speed without any throttle. Is this a high idle issue of a clutch issue? What should I do to adjust this? The second thing I noticed is that the rear brake squeels after they are used for a while. Is this a sign off wear or dirt? I have yet to open up the brakes.
I am planning on changing out the gear oil, spark plug, and air filter asap. Anything else I should do. Just want a safe ride for the kids. Thanks

Welcome to the forum. The Lt80's are a fully automatic driven by a clutch similar to a snowmobile. It seems that when you take your parking brake off, the idle is too high and it is engaging the clutch. Try turning the idle screw on the right side of the carb. That should help. As far as the brakes squealing, it could be a sign of brake wear or that might have mud or dirt in the brake drum. I hope this will help.

Welcome to the forum.
I agree, try the idle adjustment.
As far as brakes, sounds like you will need to look at them.
The clutchs should be serviced (clean and inspect) sometime soon if it wasn't recently done.

Well I attempted to open the air cleaner and the screws were a little rusted. So I managed to strip both of those easily. Lol. Not sure what my next move is with that probably try and drill them out. Next I pulled the wire off the plug and discovered a mice nest in the air box. Proceeded to pull the air box apart. No mice but packed with insulation or some other type of similar stuffing. Cleaned that pulled the plug. Didnt look so bad but will replace. Got a little side tracked. Anyway, what do i need to look for when I inspect the clutches? And what should be done to maintenance?

You may want to pull the fan cover off (by right foot) and make sure all the stuffing is out of there.
Good chance of stuffing being in the clutch area.
Front Clutch: basically you are going to clean and inspect the rollers in the front clutch. Suzuki literally packed the clutchs with grease. The grease has proven to harden and cause the rollers to not roll. This can make flat spots in the roller(s), harm the variator and the rioller plate.
Rear clutch: check the bearings and use a coarse sandpaper and gently break the glaze on the contact pads.
