The CDI box isn't in very good shape, so I am replacing it, but can that be the cause of my regulator catching on fire twice? Thanks

I worked on it today, and kept blowing fuses... if I bypass the fuse the regulator catches on fire! Tried it a few times already just to make sure (luckily got it off when I smelt smoke!). With the regulator plugged in, the wires get hot, and without it they don't. I don't really know what to do from there guess I better get my meter out again!

 

bad regulator! needs replaced. something's wrong with it inside. sounds like a grounding issue.

 

This is the 3rd one (I have replaced it twice already!)... for some reason it keeps burning up, or blowing fuses since I put a fuse in it! So far the only way those wires in that the fuse is on don't get hot is if the regulator isn't hooked up? I need that to make it work! I will try to unhook everything one by one with the regulator hooked up (with a fuse in). Process of elimination! Do you know where I should start? Thanks

 

wow. i guess i missed that in your post. wow.....this problem is gonna have to be in the wiring harness then. trace the wires out to find wire jacket insulation deficiencies that can ground out to the frame.

 

so the quad doesn't fire up and run before this happens, just when you switch it on? battery terminals are ok, right?

 

I took the wiring harness apart checked every wire... could the wires to the coil burn up the regulator if they were backwards? I took off the electric choke components and the resistor because the only thing connected to it was the electric choke. I have a manual carburetor. It was burning the regulator up before I did that though!

 

possible....wrong wires feeding wrong electricity to the wrong place.

 

you may post in the artic cat section to see if anyone has a wiring diagram if you don't have one or a manual for the quad.
