How to stop the Land Grab, Maybe
#1
This looks like a possible approach to get an honest review of Clinton's land grab. Note that the petition is not set up as a link so you have
to type it in at www.monumentpetition.com. It will be interesting to see the reaction of the granola heads if this gets off the ground. Our
experience here in Idaho is that if they can't completely control the process they will sit on the sidelines, snipe and then sue. Dealing with Clinton's illegal monuments We are all unhappy with the monuments Clinton has put in place.
Congressman Cannon (Utah) has a plan but he needs everyone's help. Please read the message below and go to the web site www.monumentpetition.com and sign the petition supporting Congressman Cannon's effort. Please pass this message on to as many people as you have in your address book.
Subject: Dealing with Clinton's illegal monuments
With the start of the Bush Administration it is finally the right time to deal with the illegal Clinton national monument designations. Now we have the right way to do it. Congressman Chris Cannon is pushing for the creation of a national commission to review them and make appropriate recommendations to President-elect Bush. He is asking people to sign a petition at www.monumentpetition.com supporting his effort. (This site also has more information about his
idea and the problems with these monument designations.)In my opinion, Rep. Cannon clearly has come up with the best way to deal with this problem. Dealing with these monuments will be a very tough political battle. There are widespread public misconceptions about monuments that the enviros will attempt to exploit as usual. The
majority of the media will add to the problem by their inevitably inept and biased coverage of any effort to eliminate any monuments or shrink
their boundaries to legal size. Yet, the essential foundation of a successful political strategy to
accomplish these goals must be a meticulously documented and exhaustive record created by a governmental entity. That means field hearings,
exhibits, the whole bit. Congress does not have the staff or the time to do this job. And, anyway, there are other more important resource issues
that only Congress can deal with. President Bush can probably do most of what needs to be done on these monuments under his existing authority. Certainly, the federal land management agencies cannot be trusted to be in charge of such a review. That leaves as the only viable
alternative a national commission like the one that Rep. Cannon is recommending. Everyone who understands-or even suspects that Clinton and
Babbitt acted illegally and unwisely in designating these monuments should enthusiastically support him. We need to get as many people as possible behind him on this. Please forward this information on to everyone you think would sign the petition.
