Scariest movie ever
To me, the fun of a scary movie is to not sit there and pick it apart, but to let yourself become absorbed into it. Anything done reasonably well then will be fun and will scare you some if you let your guard down, that's the entertainment value. Blair Witch was good, I saw the Ring and if I remember right that wasn't bad either.
That being said, I rented Jeepers Creepers and it was the worst thing I ever saw. Most of the newer scary movies are poorly written and atrociously directed, and depend on cliche` little "shocks", ripping a door open with a blast of music, etc.
In 1979 I took my girlfriend to Dawn of the Dead (yep I was a cool date) . Back then there weren't real gory movies out. Half the theater walked out in the first ten minutes, and we watched the whole thing. That one rattled me just for the graphic gore.
Carpenter's The Thing was great. Evil Dead II was a hoot. Excorsist really broke some ice and shook up a lotta people. Anything by Rob Reiner is scary, for the fact that people so liberal can actually have influence.

Scariest movie ever
The only way to enjoy a good scarry movie is to unplug the phone, grab a bowl of popcorn, put the kids to bed early, turn off the lights, and shut your trap. It's not about being macho and telling everyone with chest puffed out "I aint scared of nothin". Wow, cool for you, so why waste your time watching the moving then? It's entertainment and that's why we pay for it. I've tried to watch a scarry movie with a few drunk friends who keep flapping thier gums the whole time and then they say, "that wasn't scarry at all....burp....that movie sucked bro....burp....hahaha...." It just doesn't work.
