As you said, in 82 the economy was slow, and a person has to do whatever they can to put food on the table. If you want a hall to put you to work, of course you have to pay dues. These people arent volunteers, they are there to find you work and sometimes the economy is weak.
You probably do, do a good job and take pride in your work like most Americans. As far as making more than your union counterparts, it is not uncommon for a nonunion shop to make higher wages than the the union shop they are competeing for work with. It is not all about wages alone. It is the big picture like working conditions, benefits, vac., sick leave, etc...
Somehow this turned into union versus nonunion and I am sure we have very different opinions. What I was trying to say is that unions do a lot for workers rights, safety and better working conditions for everyone, union and nonunion alike. Democrats are usually labor freindly and I am labor. Cant go riding if I dont make enough money to buy a quad or other toy of choice. I also cant go riding if I dont get the time off to do it. Nor can I go riding if I work so much that I am too tired or injured at my job. I know that if there is an unsafe situation at work, I can do something about it and not worry about being fired.
And I dont think China really has any unions, and if they do, it will be those people that make working conditions better for everyone.

What like China? Oh yeah, their unions are well known for their workers rights. I did enter the union back in 1982,(heavy equipment, earthmoving). This was a slow period in the economy and they never found me a job, but they wanted their dues. I split and found other similar work (because I know I do a good job). I have been working full time since, and am making more than my union couterparts.
The other countries in the world who are fairing well in the market also have a high percentage of union workers.

In 1979, alot of buisnesses went under. I am sorry to hear what happened to Maxwells. A company usually opts for union workers and relies on the hall to supply the qualified labor. They may have been picketing for other reasons than the hourly wage. And the workers at other union electric shops in the area were still working at their company because they didnt go out of business still making the same wage. It is very seldom that workers put a company out of business, there are a lot of other reasons.
Again, Democrats are good for unions and Unions are good for all who work for someone else, especially in a skilled trade.

If you are a good worker with a good company. They will give you the benifits that you deserve. I can get time off at a drop of the hat, sick days, etc, etc. I hate the way unions take your money, and on your behalf, donate it to the democrats. We (or the workers) have to blindly vote what the top guys want? I know many union guys that are far from being a democrat.

Unions are usually pretty active politically and do not give money away blindly. They are aware of who the potiticians are and what they stand for. They are also people. People that are elected by the workers. Just like public office, they can be voted in or voted out. You have a voice in a union and if you dont like what they are doing you can let them know it.
I also know some union people who are not democrats. They are usually NRA members. Some people worry that their favorite past time will be taken away from them so they vote accordingly. I enjoy hunting and riding quads, but I do neither for a living. I will vote for the people who are going to remember the working man.
Again Happy, there are going to be decent employers out there that treat workers right. I beleive that unions set the standard of how workers are to be treated.
It is things like attacks on overtime pay that reaffirms republicans positions and where they stand. They talk like they are for the workers but their actions prove otherwise. I did look at the new overtime rule. Looked to me like if you make more than $455 a week, you could be exempt from being paid overtime. I dont believe $455 is a rich mans salary.

I like the idea of the government answering to the people. I like the idea of being free. I like having the freedom and security to do what I want, when I want, not because I need to but because I can. It was kinda like someone intended it that way or something(Constitiution). So there can only be one choice...George W Bush!

Bush is the only logical choice. Kerry will not protect our country. He will not stand up to the raghead terrorists. He is for a "softer approach" to dealing with our new enemy. He said he will respond to any attack on our country.....we have allready been atacked!!

Do you feel like we are winning right now? Is the answer to all disagreements overseas war? I felt good about going after a country that was harouring WMD, but we didnt find any. I also remember 9-11 very well, as it angered and saddened me very much. The threat of a similiar thing happening again is still there. Are we really better off now with Bush in office? Think about it and be honest with yourself and vote accordingly.
