A few weeks ago, I took my wolverine in for repair.
It was running terrible, backfiring, sputtering, etc… The dealer said they found dirt & debris in the carburetor bowl and jets. He said it looked like I had contaminated fuel. So after they cleaned it out and got it running just fine, I replaced the gas and installed a fuel filter.

The following weekend I was riding around my buddies farm and it ran great all day. But when I took it out this weekend, it started acting up again. I called the dealer and explained the situation to him and he said to bring it back in (which I did today). I told him if it has a dirty carb again, it would sure be nice to know where the dirt is getting in.

The air cleaner is clean and installed correctly, and a fuel filter is in place. I haven't been in any water or mud, just fields and dirt trails.

All of this service has been covered under warranty, so I'm not too upset. I just want to know how the dirt is getting in so that I can prevent future problems.

Gee, I guess Polaris' machines aren't the only atv's that develop problems periodically.

I have no experience with your machine. However I had a similar problem and found that dirt was entering the fuel from the vent line on the fuel tank.It seems some type of insect had built a nest in there and it was almost 1/2 full of dirt. After I replaced the vent line I had no more problems.

I ride with two guys with brand new Wolverines. They have not had the problems that you described. But, we have noticed that the Wolverine air filters never get dirty. I ride with them every weekend, in the same conditions and my yellow foam filter on my Honda is black with dirt and needs cleaned after every ride. They have never cleaned theirs in 3 months (about 400 miles)and claim that they are not dirty. Where do they get the air? Their bikes are running on the same air as mine, maybe the dirt is getting into the carb rather than in the filter due to a leak. I hope one of the Yamaha guys can explain or have a fix for you. Good Luck.

Regardless of whether the filter looks like it is installed correctly I would replace the lousy design with a Pro design proflow set up. The factory design just don't seal very good.

I got my wolverine back on Friday, and they said they found plastic debris in the jets again.

They think that plastic is coming from the tank, and is the result of the factory not cleaning the tank properly after the machining was done.

They apologized again for the inconvenience and assured me that they would continue to fix this problem if it comes up again at no cost.

I appreciated their honesty and quick (2-day) turnaround of the repair.

BTW - I do plan on picking up a pro-flo kit, but my finances are pretty tight right now.

Do you have a fuel filter? If not then you may want to think about installing one.

Yes , after I took it in the first time, I installed a fuel filter.
When they cleaned the carb the 2nd time they replaced the filter. I know your thinking that if I had a fuel filter, how did the debris get from the tank to the carb....I don't know.

all machines develop problems sometimes no matter what brand. don't fool your self into thinking any thing else. I owned a 350 warrior it ran bad some times needed repairs, so didnt my Honda 300 4x4. i have actually had better luck with my two Polaris machines than the others brands trust me if i had not i would not have laid down 7 grand for a SP. Think about that, I bought a second Polaris I could have bought any one i wanted, but hey when you have had better luck with Polaris than honda or Yamaha then why change? i buy all my machines brand new. no excuses about someone else abusing them first.
