I guess a rhetorical question is of no use so I'll get it right out: The spirit of debate is best followed by attacking the other persons words and ideas, not his person. You call his ideas wrong, you don't call him stupid for thinking them. Not only because it is more polite but because that's what works! The moment you deviate from arguing a subject and start calling the other guy g@y or speculating what has been in his **** canal you begin losing ground in the debate!
If the goal is to knock the other off his stride and embroil him in name calling at which you may believe yourself a better warrior, then I guess that's a strategy of sorts, but if you drop out of the discussion to throw names and the other guy doesn't follow you there then you just lost the debate!
But hey, if that's your hill to die on, knock yourself out.
