Kevin, I never heard the "Levi Paradigm" before, but it seems quite valid and instructive!
Reminds me of pre-loaded (torqued) nuts and bolts fastening plates. Pre-load with 1000 # force; what's the stress on the bolt? 1000 #, right? Apply 500 # external force, separating the plates. What's the load now? Still, 1000 #! Apply a total of 1000 # force separating the plates. Force on bolt: Still 1000 #. Only when the external force exceeds the pre-load tension does the stress on the bolt increase.
In other words, another horse team doesn't stress the pants any more than one, as you point out.

Rangerchet, thanks for the idea, I never thought about more than 1 ****** block for some reason. The extra retrieval time woudn't bother me as long as I get unstuck. Tree Farmer, thanks for all the advice and for assuming (knowing) that 2 1500# winches pulling in the same direction =3000# of power
