atvs are great for those with a disability

John-
Thanks for the weight/balance info, never would have thought of that. Game carrier sounds good. I saw something on Montana Jacks website, a 1 1/2 inch receiver hitch that accepts an expanded metal platform which would keep the center of gravity lower, also keep me from having to lift higher... I'll let you know what I find.

Raptor-
Great upper body strength due to 20+ years of pushing... The more I look, the more a receiver mounted platform seems to be the thing. As long as I don't put it too close to the ground or let it stick out too far. That kind of mount would also be quick detach for trailering.
Trailering is the next challenge. Bought my wife a Sportsman 400 so she can ride with me (she loves it!) so I need a trailer for 2 atv's. Side loaders seem really wide but end-to-end makes for a really long load. Short and wide seems to be the best idea so far. Any thoughts?

Tonka, I had the same thought as you, wide vs long. We have 4 quads in the family so we have a 16ft trailer. Sometimes its just 2 of us riding, so do I want to haul around all that? I just got done building a system for hauling 2 quads in the back of my truck, loading them up from the side. If you have a pickup with an 8ft bed it can be built for under $100.

Food for thought:
For trailering, i use a snowmobile trailer (side-byside). I put the bikes on from the side to keep the bikes from rolling off/rolling against the tie-downs. The nice thing is, if you only take one bike, you can just ride it up the tilt trailer. It is easier to have the wheelchair next to the trailer and slide off the bike onto the trailer to get in the chair. The trailer sits at just a little lower height than my wheelchair.
I have a prosthetic leg and it seems easier to use the wheelchair than to try and fight walking with this dang leg.
Good luck

Thanks Frogman and Flipper. Snowmobile trailer sounds good 'cuz I don't have a pickup to load into. Besides, getting to the top of the loaded atv might be tough! I found a neighbor with a 16 foot trailer he will loan at a moments notice so I have time to shop around. Both of our machines are registered "street legal" and I live near a huge area of national forest to explore, good weather...some of us have all the luck!

hi i live in the uk i became disabled at 17, i`m now 33, i`m a paraplegic(t5) i`ve been riding trikes and quads since my motorcycle accident in 1986. at the moment my rides are foutrax 300 4x4 and big red 250es trike.
after my accident the first trike i had was a honda 125m, it was a bit small( i`m 6foot1) but gave me the bug, i then got a yfm200 yamaha quad and a triz quad which were both great fun, went on to get a 250r and then a black and yellow tri z trike. also in between had a 200 honda big red, i live for my atv`s i love repairing and restoring them, just because i`m disabled doesn`t mean that i don`t want to ride fast and have fun. i raced 100cc karts with hand controls in the rac club championship, i had a few wins then another big crash which told me to stick to atv`s, i`m currently happily married for the last two years, i`d love to hear from anyone else in the uk or the us, thanx for listening

Steve, way to go buddy! I love to here these stories. I know that all of us with a disability have it hard at times but it helps to have a diversion. Atv riding is the one hobbie that we can enjoy with our friends that don't have a disability. It is also a way that others can see us LIVING LIFE and having fun. And they can spread the word to others that we are not shut up in the house. Steve, I raced gocarts some also. It was hard for me to hit the set up for different tracks. I was not near as successful as on the trikes and quads. I feel one of the best mods for us guys that can't stand up on the quads are shocks. When the shocks are setup softer for us that don't jump high or often, it makes a big difference. Bill Ballance(3 time GNCC champ) is helping me dial in my Custom Axis rear shock. Bill and Jeremiah Jones(01 GNC champ) both live near me. They have both been very nice to me. What do you guys think about that new Kawa 700 V twin? I bet that would make a great sport quad for us. If I did not have 7 grand in my Z400, I would try one of those. If I were to mention trading quads, My with would have a fit!!!!! Sorry for running off at the mouth. SEE YA !

its nice to hear from someone in the same situation with the same interests, thanx for the vote of confidence, you`re a lucky dog to live so close to those guys, that kawa looks an awesome piece of kit perfect for my disability don`t think its out over here yet though, i was thinking about a 400ex to put me on but they don`t have reverse do they, how is the suzy do you recommend it? theres a piccie of me on my 250r at this site http://www.3wheeler.org/ look in the forum pictures section my handle is wolfspider,
thanx again nice to hear from you.

Steve, I could not find your pics but that is a great site. I love the Z400. I have had all kinds of trikes and quads(shee, 300ex,raptor,ect) but, I like the Z the best. The 700 will be out in a month or so here. It will make a good quad for those with limited limb control. All I have to do is raise the gearshift up and add the rear brake line to the front mastercylinder with a 60'' braided line. The only thing about the 700 is that it's heavy. It would be harder for someone to help if you got it stuck. It would hurt more if it feel on you!!!
