Default Proper riding gear for winter

I've never done any winter riding. What are the best boots to keep your feet warm & dry?? How about pants and jacket? Does an over-sized rain suit work just as well? It's starting to get cold here in Northern Indiana

Use polypropylne or moisture wicking fabric close to the skin and the heavier 'membrane' outer wear such as Gore's 'Windstopper' (TM) on the outside. Layer 'loosely' in between and that should get you through anything even 'northern' Indiana can dish out.

A good quality snowmobile suit will do the job, you'll stay warm and dry. Mittens are warmer than gloves for your hands, you can install hand warmers on the quad or get the chemical heat packs and put them in your mittens to keep warm. Cover all your exposed skin to prevent frostbite, a full coverage helmet is warmer than an open faced also. Thermax type fabric next to the skin will wick moisture outward, the second layer I use polypropylene and then wool, don't wear cotton especially on your feet. Thermax socks covered by a thick wool sock will keep your feet warm, make sure your boots are not tight with the thick socks. If you ride aggressive you won't need as many clothes. If your serious about winter riding don't skimp on the quality of clothes/boots you buy, you get what you pay for. Check Cabelas (or similar) website for ideas, many of their boots are temperature rated, go for the -100's for best results.

A good pair of insulated waterproof hunting boots like Rockys will be your best bet add a pair of wool socks just in case some water gets in and top it off with some gators to let you go deeper in snow and water. Lined wind pants with wool long jons works best for leg warmth as it will still keep you warm if you get it wet. As for the coat, a good weatherproof parka is your best bet make sure to have a couple of layers under it as well including a wool long jon top for the reason mentioned above. I don't like mittens because I ride a P650 and they impede my hand controls but they may work well with your machine and riding style, otherwise go with a waterproof Thinsulate glove. Try wearing a balaclava under your helmet and make sure all the vents on your helmet are closed. A rain suit is a bad choice for winter as it will trap the moisture (leaks and perspiration) inside with you and cause you to be colder.

How cold are we talking, I ride in -40F most all winter with no problems I beleive someone said go to a snowmobile shop. He is right they now more or forgot more than anyone will ever now about riding in minus temperatures. Some good things to have is a windshield, heated handwarmers, heated thumb warmer, full face helmet with thermal shield, snow suite, top quality boots and gloves.

I love hard water fishing second best thing in the world next to getting to destination a nonfrozen condition.
