i polished the side cover among other things on my banshee. the easiest way is to glass bead to remove the paint and to smooyh the aluminum and then to polish with a soft buffing wheel.

Like I wrote above, use "liquid sand paper". Rub it on, let it sit, then use a medium grit sand paper.
