snowmobile motor in atv?

i go up north every year and ride sleds for a week. i ride a 600 yamaha 3cyl and that thing flat hauls and it is one of the slower ones. i could only imagine what one of these quad creations must be like. i would like to see one done with an arctic cat 900 thunder cat motor...sure its out there somewhere.

milz55...I just purchased a 1997 ezgo 4 stroke with a 6" lift and was thinking about doing an engine swap and saw that you just did one. I've heard of people using snowmobile engines but it's not as common as the 24hp Honda swap. Was this an easy modification? Does anyone know where I can find a good deal on any engines? The problem is I'm in Arizona and you don't find tomany snowmobiles here.

A snowmobile motor will probably have a lot more than 24hp. The one we used has around 40+ and thats completely stock. It is really important to find one that is air cooled for simplicity. We are now thinking about tackling a water cooled moter but air cooled is very easy. We had the motor installed and running in about four hours due to the fact that our cart was belt driven to begin with.
Older snowmobiles are usually very easy to come by up north and they are very cheap, Arizona probably doesn't have very many lying around unfortunatly. Check ebay maybe.

I have a golf carrt with a 617 rotax liquid cooled. I would say alot easier to do a fan cooled. Far as were you live. Honda made a 400 and 750 A automatic street bike. I was thinking of building my next with one of these. no clutch just neutral and low and high gear. then get a some raditor fan to cool it. simple easy just got to find a running motor and you can buy them off of e bay.

People get very mixed up in this. It is possible and amazing when it is done. I have seen many of these. D&D racing has built an amazing 700 dragster. ddracing.com. But you dont just drop one in a chassi. you can but its not smart. get a chassi built. its worth the money if you are serious enough about it. snowmobiles put out alot of horsies and alot of torque, and they will twist your regular atv chassi. you will most likely have to cut and weld a chassi to get the engine to fit, which also isnt smart. A sled engine will snap most welds unless professionally done.

I'm building a purpose build dragger & puller, using an all aluminum frame, & my 488 2 stroke twin, & forward / reverse tranny out of my mid 90's Yamaha Venture... the engine will be mounted in the rear, & backwards so the the intake is in the front, & the exhaust out the rear... it will sit very low, & you'll ride it in the position of a rice rocket... this is a long term project, & I have most of the parts already collected... it's getting close to the time to start assembling... the whole quad will only weigh between 225 - 250 lbs... should be a ripper...
