We could really have a little fun with you, and tell you that you need to coat your filter in grease an inch thick, then tell you to take it for a ride and see what happens! But, what they actually mean is a seal of grease around the base of the filter, just to be sure it is airtight. Seeing the filter is only supported by a cage, and really isn't "clamped" on like many filters are, this is an extra precaution.
To oil my filters, I always have used Maxuma FAB1 which is very sticky stuff anyway, so back when I owned a Blaster I never bothered with the grease thing. If you however oil it with some kind of light oil, I would highly recommend doing the grease thing.

you guyes are right about oiling it. but the grease is a good idea to use on the mating surfaces. (where the filter is sucked tight to the airbox, and where you bolt it down) grease is much thicker and will ensure a tight seal so there is no leaks. any leak is where dust or dirt can get in which isnt the best thing for you engine. it also decreases the life of the intake system. reeds and could, over time, damage the slide in the carb. cheap security. wouldn't hurt now would it?

You just work a light oil into the filter to help catch dirt. You can use a light oil or they make air cleaner oil. When it's dirty you wash with a mild soap, dry, then reoil.

yep, u could wash it in a tiny bit of gas to, i have a UNI and i bought it preoiled..and when she's dirty i just use gas, all u have to do is set it in there and everything just falls out of the filter...then just set it out to dry takes like 10 seconds

With my luck, the gas can would slip and poor about a gallon on the filter. Not bad enough, the carb would probably backfire. Man that would burn my a$$. I keep a cheap tube of white grease in the tool kit just for sealing the filter boot and the clutch vent tube connections.
