I'd like to express my opinion on jet kits in general & I'm sure many will disagree with me, especially the people at K&N & Dyno.
In all the time I've been riding bikes & quads and in venues ranging from trails, observed trials, desert, woods, etc., I have yet to replace any jet other than the main unless it was just worn out or damaged. Certainly, the needle jet requires adjustment
for various conditions but altering the taper has never been necessary or desirable.
Possibly in some very extreme altitude situations, rejetting other than the main could be necessary, but I ride at 7500 to 8000' in the summer and simply drop three sizes on the main on my Warrior & it's right on.
I feel that the reason so many riders have a problem with jetting is because they buy these kits and change so many things at once that they end up in left field without a clue.
Of course it is a good revenue item for the firms who sell them but most of the jets in their kits just rattle around in the owner's tool box.
My suggestion is, depending on what improvements are made to the intake & exhaust system, pick up 2 or 3 fatter main jets & ride & test. Put the money you save in joining the Blue Ribbon Coalition so you'll have a place to ride tomorrow.

Hot_Shoe,
When you say three sizes, in what increment are those three sizes? In steps of 1, 2, 10?
Like going from a 154 main to 156 or 154 to 164? I am trying to get into this tuning for two stokes, and like you talked about, I went and bought this big 'ol carb for my LT 250 R, whih has given me headaches.
My stock carb was hashed so I thought id give it a try and its been tough ever since. I am at 6000 feet and in the summer I ride at 8500 at the dunes.
Thanks for your help

Actually if you know what your are doing, the K&N & Dyno-Jet kits do offer performance gains over stock jetting and needles. It's not just the main jets, but the needle makes a huge difference. Some of these work better for some than others depending on altitude and engine characteristics.

When I said "3 sizes", I meant the next 3 successive sizes, what ever they might be. For example, on my Warrior the stock main is a 145, but at home at 3200" I had to go from a 147.5 to a 150 to finally a 155, which is three sizes fatter. I summer at 75oo" I have tom drop back to the stock 145

I think Dynojet supplys the jets and needle etc. in the K&N kit and K&N supplys only the filter.

So, I'd like to put in a K&N filter in my 400ex, but don't want the loud exhaust. I want a little added performance. From what I hear suggested in this thread, is that I put the new filter in, then increase main jet sizes until the thing coughs at wide open throttle, then back one down and call it good? Is this correct?

Moses,
You are more or less correct..I would simply go two sizes fatter on my main. Many times just one size on a main is such a slight difference it is hardly noticable, and assuming you still have the stock jet installed now and have not made any other changes, it should be right on the money. If it sputters on top end you can always drop one size. It's always better to err on the side of rich rather than lean..the worst that can happen is a fouled plug.
