Default spark arrestor, is it really needed?

Is a spark arrestor really necessary? I understand the theory behind it, but after I pulled the one out of my sons Eton Viper it really woke it up (of course its a 2 stroke so it was gummed up). Now I'm thinking about pulling the one out of the Ozark. And reason why I shouldn't? Also any tips' on getting it out. I took out the screw but the 'sleeve' is stuck. Thanks...

If you ride in a national forest and some state forests you are required by law to have a spark arrestor. You can do what you want on private land.
