Need clutch help
#1
Ever since I got my 300ex, the clutch hasn't been working right. If I pull in the clutch lever while in gear, the quad keeps moving untill I use the brakes or give it gas. If I'm in neutral and I pull the clutch in and shift to first, it is almost like I'm using no clutch at all. It clanks and the quad starts to move even though the clutch is pulled in. The clutch plates aren't disengaging for some reason. I thought for sure it was the clutch springs so I replaced those but it didn't help. My plates are in spec, cable is properly adjusted, the basket isn't grooved, and I just put in fresh motor oil. What else is left? The only thing I didn't check for was for plate warpage. Could the plates be warped?

Your clutch plates are probably worn. You also might have some grooveing on the ears of your clutch basket which would cause the plates not to be able to slide apart from eachother. Tear it apart and check the thickness of your plates and also check your basket for grooving. If it is not bad then you can clean it up abit with a file. But if it is severe then you will have to get a new basket.

The inner clutch hub can also be grooved not just the outer basket. Also, 92LT hasn't stated whether he knows for sure that he has used the proper AMOUNT and TYPE of atv transmission oil. He could have put in fresh oil and completely filled the tranny area (way too much) and that will not work properly to say the least. You can also check the pressure plate for any deformity. Warped plates do sound like the most likely culprit though. You'll have to remove the plates and place them on a flat surface to find out.
