i remember a guy turbo-ing his 400ex for drags( in a old dirtwheels mag) i think he lived in hawaii or some where like that. but he had it himself i think b/c he used a turbo kit for the honda civic. and plus i dont have 4000 to spend on one.if i get the turbo and the bov from the junk yard i can make the rest and it will cost me less than 200. thanks for the comments guys

 

There was a article in a ATV mag a couple months ago about a company in New mexico or MExico that Turbo charges and sells the kits for doityourselfers. They tested a Raptor with the turbo unit and running it at 8-10 psi I think. A little more than double the stock hp rating. Same results was done when installed on the 400ex, a hair over double the stock hp rating. They said you could turn up the boost to about 14psi but porting, exhaust, and minor engine enhancements should be done to get the full benefit of the 14psi of boost, but 8-10psi could be done with the stock motor and still make amazing power and retain the reliability of the stock motor. (as long as your not always trying to break the sound barrier every time you get on the quad)

Yes the kits sold for $4000, but how much would it cost to get double the hp and retain the reliability going all motor. It all depends on how fast you want to go. I will dig through my old ATV mags and get the company name and numbers and post it sometime late tonight or tomorrow.

On making your own kit there is a lot of little things you will have to do. I know when cars have a aftermarket kit put on it you have to have the timing right on or a little retarded and run a colder plugs. I think there were a couple model street bikes from the 80's that were turbo. Maybe pick up a parts bike from a bike boneyard and you would have most of the parts that you would need. Just a idea.
