2002 sportsman 700 starting problems
Guys,
We could use some help. Our 2002 700 has become very erratic when trying to start it. This morning, I tried to start it and it would just click when I hit the switch and kind of buzzed when I turned the switch off. I put a charger on it and that made no difference. Yesterday, we rode it about 10 miles, shut it off and it wouldn't start. Just clicks when we hit the switch. After I had taken the charger off and let it sit for an hour or so, I tried the switch and it fired right up. Could it be the selenoid going bad? Is there something else I should look at? We replaced the starter last year with no changes in it's performance. We also replaced the ignition switch earlier this year. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

Solenoids can go out,but eliminate the battery as a problem first(any auto shop can load test it) Especially if you rode it for 10 miles and then it wouldn't start! PLUS the 2002 and 2003 and early 2004 carb model 700s had a problem on the ignition system which required a complete change out from the stator all the way to the regulator/rectifier on a lot of affected machines (which could a another reason for the battery charging/starting problem) Must charge between 14 to 14.5 volts while running.Keep us updated. Thanks for the quick response. We tested the charging system about 3 weeks ago and it's charging. We put a new battery in at that point and wanted to make sure it was charging. Plenty of power for the winch, lights, etc. Also, it turned over very quickly and started right up when we tried later. Really has me kind of stumped. How expensive is the entire system change?
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Most all the Ducati electronics failed on these machines. The kit # 2202602 through Cycle Parts Warehouse is $475,not cheap ,but probably cheaper than the local dealers! I replaced about 4 or 5 kits before I retired and the common symptoms customers would have was that the machines would just die,or run good until they stopped and wouldn't crank back up,etc. The kit includes the stator, flywheel, cdi and coil,reg/rectifier, regulator jumper wire harness kit and instructions. You can check on the forum for additional posts on this problem. There were NO bulletins issued from Polaris on this! The systems just changed from the Ducati to the much better Kokusan system! OPT
