1999 Scrambler clutch problems
#1
Hey I have a 1999 Polaris Scrambler 500. I went through some water a couple weeks ago. I took the clutch cover off and didn't see any moisture in it. But belt broke and melted together. I got a new heavy duty belt and put that on. Now when I put it in gear it starts moving by its self. Is this because of the new belt or the idle to high or clutch problems. I ordered a primary clutch rebuild kit cause the buttons are really wore. Should I do the clutch rebuild or get a new clutch. Also how do I find out if the secondary clutch buttons are bad?
I have a 1997 Polaris Trailblazer that isn't working right now. Would that clutch work on my Scrambler. If I took switched the weights and spring would this work.

Replace the worn front clutch slide buttons. You have to have the "spider tool" to break the clutch down to do this! "IF" the clutch area where the buttons glide are grooved badly then you might later on consider a new clutch. Lot of people have had problems with after market belts and oem belts have usually been better especially on not creeping. Unless you have taken the secondary apart before, best to get a manual as it would take me a while to tell you how,BUT here are the basics:Take the secondary off the transmission, turn it over and tap the helix down a bit and hold to where you can remove the snap ring and washer. when you pull the helix up the spring will unwind. The 3 ramp buttons are beneath the helix on the clutch.Replace the buttons if worn ,have the spring in helix position 2 and lower on the splines to line up the bottom of the spring on the other # 2 position at the bottom of the clutch. While holding the helix down slightly with your stomach, hold the bottom clutch sheath and turn the top sheath counter clockwise 1/3 turn ONLY. While holding both top and bottom sheaths (best if you have c clamps or helping hands) knock the helix down and replace the washer and circlip. When you release the sheaths they should snap back! Confused?? If so, then it's best to get a manual! A pictures worth a thousand of my old words! OPT

Thanks for the quick reply OPT. Ok I should probably replace the clutch. Is the new belt whats making it move as soon as I put it in gear? Will the clutch off of a 1997 polaris trailblazer 250 work or not. What will happen if I just do the rebuild kit?

It's probably the after market belt making it creep especially if it's wider than the oem belt OR it could just be needing to shim out or remove shims on the rear clutch against the transmission to align front and rear clutches if the belt is not riding in the center of the front clutch and touching the inner or outer sheath(Which could cause it to creep) The clutches are of the same design on the Trailblazer and the Scrambler (rear clutch ramp buttons, spring, etc) are "basically" the same (difference in spring part numbers). Difference also could be the spring setting (2-2 on the Trailblazer versus I think 2-1 on the Scrambler?) and could swap over "IF" the transmission shafts are the same diameter. Rear clutch ramp button replacement is the same on both the 99 and 97. I didn't do much swapping around parts, just repaired what was there! OPT
