Default 2006 Sportsman 500 HO Starting Issues

Here is the history on the machine. I got here in June and this machine was already here, was told all it needed was a fuel tank, found out it needed more. I fixed most of what was wrong. I still have not received the fuel tank, took a tank on a 2003 Sportsman 700 and put it on this one, also the fuel select ****. once it, found out it had no spark, changed the Ignition coil and spark plug, only got spark when you hit the throttle a little. Adjusted the throttle and now get good spark. It will crank, but wont start, so was guessing, no fuel. I'm getting fuel at the carb. Sprayed some starting fluid in the carb, and it seamed like it wanted to start, but won't get going. Had a few backfires out of the carb, but still not start. My guess would be either valve adjustment, cylinder compression, or engine timing. I have no way here to check the compression. anyone have any other ideas?

Make sure you have only 1/8" slack at the thumb throttle or the etc switch will retard spark. Usually valves are not the problem, but you can check the clearance just to make sure. Pull the valve cover and the right side cam sprocket cover. Pull the recoil rope slowly and as the intake rocker arms go down and come up look at the cam sprocket and have the cam sprocket locating pin top center of the head. This is TDC. Valve clearance on intake and exhaust is .006 Under the front panel should be a silver finned module,"If" you have the CARB model and not an efi machine it's in the recall area for ecm replacement. If you still have a BLACK Chinese module, this needs to be replaced! http://www.usrecallnews.com/2008/02/...scrambler.html

I have a carb model, i dont have a ECM on hand, but probably can get a hold of one fairly quick. Being out here i would most likely say it was not changed out. Ill replace it and go from there. thanks, will let you know how it goes.
