Default sportsman 400, 2005 solenoid?

I have a sportsman 400, 2005 that won't start. The battery was dead, I put the charger on it for a while.

It started to turn over normally but didn't start. Then it sounded like the solenoid clicked and the instrument cluster went dead. Shut it off tried it again and same results.

Each time the instrument cluster goes dead. The clicking sound seems to becoming from what I am assuming is the solenoid forward of the battery.

Did the solenoid get fried? Thoughts?

thanks.

Have the battery load tested.Plus keep a battery on tender and you can get added years of service. If it wont hold a charge, probably why the display goes out and the solenoid just clicks.

OPT; so I've put a charger on the batter for several hours this morning an checked the battery with my volt meter. not sure about my readings (or even sure if I know how to read it correctly) so I checked against a car. the reading on the atv battery is much than what I get off a car.

I turned the key over and it now buzzes much louder and stronger than the click the other day. Does this mean anything? Just trying to determine if its the battery or solenoid. thanks.

A regular volt meter just shows voltage, not if the battery can take an amperage load or not. Batteries can show 12 volts or more on a meter, but can still be have a bad/sulfated cell.Any auto store can load test it just so you can eliminate the battery as the problem. If the battery checks out, then you could have a faulty solenoid or other electrical problems. Just one step at a time.

New battery installed, fired right up.

One more for you; I have two atv and two motorcycles X 4 battery tenders = expensive. Well, $32 each.

Any way to set up 4 running together rather than buy 4 individuals? that would be less expensive?

Here's the first one I could find. They may be others or better prices. Battery Tender 12 Volt 1.25 Amp International Battery Charger - 4 Banks - Free Shipping: BatteryMart.com

Plenty of them on Amazon, ebay, from $150 and up for the 4 bank chargers. One we had at the shop saved us a lot of time on servicing new machines. Once they were taken out of the crate and on the floor the battery went on the maintainer. May not need one like we had,but it handled all size batteries and never had a problem.
