Shifter cable stretching?

Shifter cable stretching?
My 2004 Ranger 500 has about 240 hours on it. Last month I found that it would not go into reverse. I fixed that with a simple adjustment to the shifter cable - I needed to move the retaining nut near the shifter arm about a half inch. It shifted fine for about 2 weeks and then had the same problem. This time, there wasn't enough thread left to adjust the cable. For a short term fix, I moved the cable up to another hole on the shifter arm, but it's clear that the second hole was not meant as a shifter cable mount. (The hole is a different size and shape than the original mounting hole.) Once again, it is working. So... here is my question. What is more likely - that the shifter cable is stretching, or that there is slippage inside the transmission such that the arm is pivoting forward?
Any insights from members with experience would be most appreciated; I would have no trouble replacing the cable), but would never trust myself to rebuild the transmission! .
