A hand shifter is basically a metal bar that extends from the foot shifter so you can shift by hand (ex. in deep water mud etc.). But don't waste your money on one. I no longer have mine simply because the shift through on the Xpedition is so long the bar usually hits the front fender when shifting down and my side (ouch!) upshifting. If you want to see what one looks like, check out highlifter.com and go to the online catalog section under acc. Some people may like it (maybe on honda's or yamaha's because of the shorter "throw") but I think it is a waste on a 425.

Hope this helps!
