maybe your red light doesn't work and you don't know it, but it is overheating? Did the fan used to run fairly often? maybe the fan is not working, therefore the engine gets hot, and the motor shuts down when it senses it is too hot, but the red light did not come on because it is not working? Does the red light come on before you start the quad, like when you turn the key on?

Am I missing something..You guy with Trail Bosses, do you have a red light that comes on when starting?

On my Xplorer I installed a temp guage ( see pics ) and hooked the red light up to my fan so when the fan is running the light is on. I did this because concern that the fan hardly ever ran. Now whenever the fan runs the light is on. After doing this I discovered that 95% of the time my ATV runs below 120 degrees. At around 130 is when the fan comes on. I also installed a switch to manually turn the fan on if I want to. Just some info you might want to think about.
