Buy you a compression gauge they arent that expensive and it could save you from unneeded work.

that trail boss is a 250, non reed valve, air cooled, 2 stroke engine. if the smoke is blue then dont worry the oil pump is working properly it may just need adjusting. check the spark plug if it is black lean out the oil mixture a little bit if it still smokes heavily then it will need a honing and re-ringing. but just remember it is an older 2 stroke, 2strokes are gonna smoke. i had a 99 trail boss 250 and it smoke a fair about so a little smoke is normal remember that.

Any suggestions on a good compression gauge? and basic operation?

This machine smokes alot, two laps around the yard and I could see a cloud.

I will have to wait until the repair manual I ordered comes in, in order to tell which screw to adjust the mix, unless there is an easy way to tell just by looking at the carb.

I have an 89 trailboss, and it did the same thing yours is doing when it was oil injected. I am now running amsoil premix, and it doesn't even smoke at all. Although I just did a complete topend rebuild, I think the main problem was the injection. Here's what I have in the top end: Wiseco piston .40 over($70), Cometic gaskets($15), bore/hone($30). I have a $115 in the top end, and it runs like new. I would reccomend you running premix if you don't want it to smoke anymore, and premixing is just as easy as filling the oil reservoir. One other thing I would definitely do is take the carburetor completely apart and soak it in carburetor cleaner, this will make starting it alot easier. Make sure the oil is TCW-3.

Thanks for the advise. I'd tried running it this past weekend and it ran terribly. No speed and bogged down occationally. I wont be riding this one for a while.

Thanks again.

On another subject. Do you have any information on the Dinli 90cc diamondback atv? or any Dinli products?
