Hi everyone-

Living in Maine it has already become pretty chilly here at night. This will be my first winter with my ATV. I had some questions concerning the weather changes...I plan to ride all winter long.

First off all is there any special as far a fluids that i need to do for the cold weather?

Will i damage it being left in no heat storage garage?

I have heard stories about it being so cold and going to ride and the cv boots just crumble...

I guess i would just like to hear from some other riders that live in the frozen north that things are fine when the temps get cold...

HonkeyBall...I live in minnesota and we store out atvs in my grandmas barn. They do not need any "special fluid" or anything like that. we also run them in the snow(when we get it) and the only boot I have had to replace was on my bomby and that happend in the summer. hope this helped

its getting very cold down here in jersey too, theres nothin you have to do, if you want get an engine heater to keep you engine warm all the time.

I am talking really cold temps here but

If you have an extra battery laying around that could stay inside and up to temp and charged but used for jumping the first time in the morning you will be surprised how much quicker you can get the quad started.

 

When I store mine during winter, this is what I do. I fill the gas tank and put Stabil in it first and let it run through for a few minutes. I also wait until spring to change the fluids to prevent moisture frim getting in there. I make sure I drain my recoil housing and starter too. I also like to put it up on my ATV jack to take the wieght off the suspension. Then, I grease all the zerks and spray the chain, axel, tie rods and tie rod ends, lugh nuts, and any other bar metal parts with Triflow (or some other rust preventative spray oil) to prevent rust. I also make sure I clean it really good before hand.

 

Change the front diff oil and hub oil or any fluids which may have been contaminated with water, I run my SP all winter plowing my driveway. There is too much snow to go to the woods and refuse to drive on trails(ie groomed smowmobile trails)
