a friend of mine has a 02 scrambler 500 and broke a few teeth off his front sprocket,what's the cause of it?

A few years ago, I was taking an old barn I inherited apart, and was using my bike to haul a trailor of planks to my home about a mile away, When I left that nite, I could hear a clicking noise in the front of the bike.... got home, put bike in the toy shop, jacked the bike up with all 4 wheels off the ground, started the bike with awd engaged and tried to see what was wrong in the front....noticed two teeth missing in a row on the front sprocket, and on the frame next to the sprocket and chain was a bent 3"+ spike!!!!!

My Scram had the front sprocket blow apart just driving normally I found the pieces and examined them and found out that the casting had purosity in it and I took it to my dealer showed him and got my front backsprocket replaced plus a new chain and case protector all replaced for free.
I was about 20 miles from home and thought oh no what am I gonna do now but then remembered AWD switch flicked it and drove with front wheels.I got some strange looks from other atv'ers when I was roosting in the mud with just the fronts and the rears doing nothing they must of thought it was a new fangled front drive atv

 

lol... that woulda been funny to watch..
i use to have a scrambler until i traded in for my pred... my buddy works at the dealer i go too and the kid they sold my scram too came back a few days later and 5 teeth were gone off the front.. the kid had the chain butt tight tho... cause to him the inch or so of play in it was loose.. we just figured it was because of the chain... maybe not tho.
