They all are pretty much identical. Other than the engine, slight trans gearing, and weight (only 20-30 or so lbs between 500 and 600/700. You can't go wrong with either of the three. IMO, 600 has more low end than 500, and 700 has more top end than 600. I like my 600 though, you won't be able to tell much difference between the twins, but they both are stronger than the 500. I would say go ride all three, starting with the 500 and work up. Good luck.

The 500 has (had?) softer front springs. I'm not sure about the '04 but everyone I ride with that has a 400 or 500 Sportsman has had the 700's springs installed in their fron ends. The result is a better handling quad (stiffer springs = less roll) and a bit mroe groung clearance in the front end.

If you need serious torque then the 600/700 is the way to go. If you are just trail riding then the 500 will get you anywhere you ever would dare to go. The nice thing about the 500 is the fact that it will consume less fuel and cost less. I for one don't see a need for anything bigger than the 500. You can add some nice accessories to the 500 for the price of the stock 600.
