Some correspondance that I have read states that the weight of the 400 and 500 are the same. Is this true? I believe that the 500 has 40mm carbs compared to 34's on the 400. Is that the only difference? Or is it a typo?

It sounds likely. There's very little difference between the 400, 500, 600 and 700, aside from Engine/tires (400 is smaller). The fact the 400 and 500 weigh the same sounds right.
