I have a 04.5 sportman 500, and I really do like it. I dont have as much experience with atv's as some of the other people in this forum, but everyone that has rode on my machine has said that they are impressed with it. I made my decision to purchase a 04.5 by reading the posts on this forum. I am really impressed with the engine braking and the power sent to the wheels even in two wheel drive.

From what I've read, the SP500 is probably the most tried and true Polaris model. While Polaris is still addressing some bugs on the 600 and 700 (carb issues, excesssive drive train noise, leaky water pump covers), the 500 has already earned a reputation of good reliability. Like the Iceman, I also bought my 500 after reading other positive posts on this quad. I like my Sportsman 500 more than my Prairie 700, if that's saying anything.

The 500 is a great machine. I have owned two 500s, a 2001 and a 2002. The 2001 was totaled when I rolled it end over end several times down a hill. Thankfully, I had purchased insurance prior to the accident which paid for a new machine. I tested every make of four wheeler and decided on another SP500. The 500 is an incredible machine with the best ride and performance for the $$$.

I have also purchaced an 04.5 recently and just love it. The power is great, traction is always there even in the 6 in deep dust. It is quiet and that allows me to get real close to wildlife. There is not anything that I would change @ this point in time. There are things that i want but that is a whole other issue. My dealer has answered all my questions and been very helpful. My only complaint is that the frnt drive shaft grease zerk is quite inaccesible. So I rectified that with a little cussing and a 90 degree zerk. If you are looking to buy I don't think you could go wrong with a 500.
Good luck and happy hunting
