Default another speedo/odometer, AWD problem

i've been reading this very informative site trying to figure out my problem. its an 01 sportsman 400, bout 350miles on it. i have no AWD light coming on, no speedo working, and the digital odometer won't come on. i've been told its probably the speedo gone bad. when i have the AWD switch on, machine running and in High Gear, i check voltage in the two wires going to each hub and both sides have about 14.5 volts on each wire. am i maybe testing them wrong? i put the black probe on the chassis/ground and the red on each wire separately and they both read 14.5. i get voltage to the larger plug at the back of the speedo on all wires, but they're not all 14 volts or so. the smaller plug on the back of the speedo i get 14 volts at the red wire, and no voltage at the white. the gear indicator shows when i'm in Reverse, but not in Low or Neutral like it use to. i noticed over the summer the gear indicator started doing funny stuff but then it fixed itself. it was showing Reverse lit up when it was actually in High, or Neutral lit up when in Reverse. then it just started working fine again. what controls that? must be the switch in the gearbox by the rear wheels? could these be two separate problems? please help ASAP, can't afford to take it in at $55 an hour to be told i need a new $220 speedo. i plow with this thing and we're getting snow now, and more to come soon. thanks guys.

If you have a service manual, it shows step by step how to test the speedo with a mulitmeter. If you don't, maybe someone can scan and email you the instructions.

yes i have tested it with a voltmeter. and yes i read all the posts when i searched for "AWD", "Speedometer", and "4x4". but nothing really came up that told me what my problem is. i read some stuff about splicing wires and such, but don't really want to do that. okay here is one, i turn on the lights and no light comes on in the speedo, but there is all kinds of voltage going to it on each wire.
