VBAR,
i think that if you came to this Forum thinking you would find a bunch of un-happy Sportsman500 owners, you are going to come-up empty handed.

the Sportsman500 is already one of the most highly respected ATVs out there.

and as for the couple of problems on the Sportsman700 and 600, Polaris stood behind their product and covered it. (leaky water pumps)

i've read about rough idle in cold weather on A FEW 600/700s, and like someone said above there is an update for that to. i've personally owned 4 Sportsman700 models (carb models) and i never had a cold weather problem.

Bing and Bubba297 gave you some of the best advice....RIDE 'em both and then decide!

sincerely,

well vbar, i can't tell you anything about the sportsman - never owned one or rode one. i do, however, own 3 scrambler 4X4s, a 1996 400 wildly modified, and two 500 HOs, 1998 and 2000. I have beat the holy out of these bikes and they keep on going. They are high maintanence toys but as long as they get that maintanence they hold up pretty well. I haven't had a bunch of unusual mechanical trouble, other than stuff I broke while exploring the limits of adhesion.

I dont have any experience with Yamaha but from what I have read the Kodiak 450 only has a 421cc engine. The Sportsman 400 has a 425cc engine and the 500 has a 499cc engine. All things being equal displacement is a key!
