My 400 did the samething and it was caused by the nut backing off a little.Hey at least the clutch didnt blow up.Had that happen on my 425 and had to replace EVERYTHING inside the hub plus the hub.NOW THAT hurt the wallet.

I had the same problem but it was not my fault. The dealer changed a cv boot for me and forgot to put the spacer inside the cage roller so when he torqued everything up all the force was on the armature plate and the strut. He had to replace the strut leg and all the components inside free of charge.

Are you really that big of a moron? I can think of things to laugh at, but this sure isn't one of them.

There is a torque sequence to first seat the bearings and then without going below a lower torque value, setting it for operations. If I remember right it 156 lb-in then back to 128 lb-in for operations It sounds like the assembly was not put togther correctly and the torque actually pushed the three fingers into the housing of the clutch.
Without a doubt this would cause the problem. Need to make sure the parts are correctly seated before you secure that thing is place. It would also explain the bent armature plate. Did you find any used parts?
