I hate that. My starter drive was doing that. I put some synthetic grease on both ends of the drive gear and any other part that moves on it. It helped out a lot. Sometimes I have to tap on the recoil housing though to get it to kick out. Only when its cold though

hey 420 the starter and starter drive are two different things and it sounds like your starter drive is sticky on the recoil side. I took mine apart and cleaned it up and now it works good. there is a little ring on the top you have to pry off. When you put it back together give it a little tap with a hammer because it gets stretched when you take it off. hope this helps

The Dark Side possibility............. Did you happen to disconnect the battery, then maybe connect it back with reverse polarity? This will make the starter spin backwards and the starter drive will never engage.

Im glad that didnt happen when I by mistake put my battery in backwards. I took my starter drive gear out, cleaned it, regreased it, and was good to go.
