Friend of mine is looking to get an ATV and up till now was set on a rancher until I took him to the polaris dealer. He really wants a polaris now but not sure what to get, and Im not much help since I dont know much about them either. The one he was looking at was the 400 Xplorer, but there was also an Xpedition, Magnum 500 and the popular Sportsman. Which model polaris would you all recommend ? We came to the conclusion that the Sportsman would be great but its out of the price range so something less pricey is needed. Thanks for any input. By the way, the price range is 5000-5500. If needed and if worthy, he might be able to stretch it just a bit.

400 Explorer, with metal racks.

My opinion

Agree. 400 Explorer. Rancher is also a great quad. Don't count it out.

I owned a 99 500cc Sportsman,a great quad.I had numerous problems with mine.I know many folks that ride them trouble free.

I now own a 00 400cc Xplorer. The Xplorer is faster, lighter by 110lbs,and much more nimble.I feel it is a superior mudder and climber.I still haul the exact same trailer load of wood with my Xplorer that I did my Sportsman.

The Sportsman deleivers the best ride of any ATV I've ever been on.All in All?If I'd of known back in 99 about the Xplorer,I would of never bothered to buy the Sportsman. My choice?Definatly the Xplorer.=====Bill

If he's willing to settle for a two stroke, get the Xplorer 400. If it's 4 stroke he wants, get Magnum 500....but if belt drive seems to be a problem for him, then get the Expedition 425.

You should go with the Honda it's a great dependable bike and the belt systems on Polaris drag them down.
