Default 1999 Polaris Scrambler 4x4

I'm new to quads and am looking around to purchase one. Have owned them in years (many) past and currently own a dirt bike but would like some input on this quad.

Is it reliable for a 2-stroke (ie life expectancy before top end etc)?

Is it a good trail quad?

How is the bottom end and can it be improved without alot of effort?

Can they be quited down to the range of a 4-stroke? (might take it hunting once in awhile)

Anything else you can tell me would be appreciated.

I will be riding the quad mainly around our place so I am not concerned with what it will or won't outrun, just looking for something to play around on, maybe hook a trailer to once in awhile etc. I used the search function but didn't find exactly what I was looking for on this quad.

Forum looks very nice and I'm looking forward to owning a quad and participating in the forum.

Welcome to the fourms. The Scrambler is a great trail quad, I had a 99 4x4. You can change the front sprocket to get more low in tourqe. The stock pipe is some what quite, i'm not sure if they make a quiter pipe for one. I have never been into quite pipes. I would get a injecter block off for it, that way you can mix it your self, I have one brand new....if enterested pm me and I will give you a good deal on it. You might have to rering it every 50 to 60 hours or so. If you use a good syn 2 stroke oil it will last alot longer.

Yes I should be working.....if mother nature would help me out. It needs to warm back up....or snow a foot. This in the middle sucks....it don't pay for my mods....I mean bills

I hear that. We are have a nice day, just cold as nuts. My guys are out spraying and fertilizing though. Just have to deal with some frozen stuff after along drive.

There was a resturant that ran its irrigation all night, it sprayed out onto a busy raod, nothing but ice, 5 or 6 cars were wrecked when i drove by.

I hate the cold...

Thanks for the input so far guys appreciate it.

How easy are these things to work on? I've wrenched a little on 2-stroke Jetski's etc but never on a quad?

As long as you have a Polaris manual, its not too bad.

Welcome, the first thing to check is the counterbalancer oil,the dipstick is right behind the pull rope facing the tranny. If it is milky, that's not very good. That would mean that the water pump seals have been leaking. This does bad things to the bearings in there.Next would be to check the compression,if it's close to 110 then you may have to rebuild, and get rid of the stock piston. If you know where the bike has been it would help alot.

RAJ,

If I would do the OI block off is this system a variable rate injection, thus requiring a rejet when going to pre-mix?

I don't think you will have to rejet. I have never put one on a stock engine before. When I was 12 my dad bought me a Honda Fat Cat.....it had 3 wheeler tires on it...well anyway, he fixed it up for me, and the day he got it fixed I took her for a spin....and the enjection system quit working...so I burned a hole in the piston. I wa not able to get it on the Scrammy before I sold it.

Something to think about is what ced said....the stock piston is bad for breaking the skirt off. I is cheap to rebuild a 2 stoke, you may want to put a new piston in it. And you can check the bore then...to see if you need to fresh the bore up.
