Rear Wheel bearing help
#1
I have a rear wheel that wobbles quite a bit. I had a simillar problem on one of my trailer wheels and I could fix it by simply tightening the nut down farther that held in the bearing. What holds the bearing in? Is it just time to replace it? If so, can I just try replacing the bearing w/o the race first? I just don't want to have it torn apart in the garage for a week while I wait for parts.
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,
Mike

are you talking on sportsman? if so the rear bearing is a big ball bearing. all one piece. about $50 dealer. never looked at parts stors local. sure one would have it cheaper, if not you can order online.

Jack your machine up and take the rear tire off to determine whether the looseness you’re experiencing is in the bearing that’s in the hub or the three suspension bushings that hub is attached to. I don’t know about a ’96 but later model Sportsmans have a big sealed bearing inside the hub, although it can come apart if half of it gets stuck on the CV stub axle when you’re removing it to replace a torn boot (ask me how I know). Replacing the bearing requires some pretty basic mechanical disassembly, then just heat up the hub to expand it and the bearing will fall out, at least mine did. If your bushings are worn replace the nylon and metal parts, again pretty basic mechanical skills and normal tools are all that’s required.
