Went for a run this weekend and did some mudding in stuff very similar to chocolate cake mix, really slippery stuff.

Anyway, when the mud finished playing with us (yea the mud won . . . this time) I noticed a "squeeling" sound coming from my Xplorer 400 when starting. Sounded like the starting motor and would only happen as the bike was starting and stop when she was running.

When I got home and cleaned her up the sound did not occur. Would it be possible that the "soup" we enclountered caused the problem?

Or should I start digging within the motor?

Did you drain the recoil starter housing?

Also you may want to grease up the starter drive and flywheel. Polaris makes a special grease for this which should elminate your squeeling problem.

I would take the recoil starter housing off and clean the bendix take out the drain plugs and spray some wd-40 in it. Also put some kind of silicone around the pull start and around the housing

When I remove the recoil starter, will the spring "pop out" and cuse all sorts of grief.

I have had flashbacks to my 1983 Trimoto 125 when I was replacing the pull cord and the spring in the housing decided that it did not like where it was living and came out. 2 weeks later I had it recoiled.
