98 XPLORER 400 HELP/OPINIONS
I have a 98 Xplorer 400 that I bought last year. I have had it in two separate shops to have anything fixed they said it needed as I did not want any headachs. This included clutch work, front end, bushings, brakes and all the fluids changed.
However when I am out with my buddies I seem never to be able to keep up (they all ride 500 fourstrokes). The quad kind of bogs when you first give it gas then accelerates fine up to about 35-40mph but after that it is a real push to get any more peppy power out of it. On a smooth surface I can eventually get it up to 55mph. Is this normal for these quads? I have read other post that said guys got these quads up to 70mph. Not that top speed is important to me but it would be nice if it were peppier, and I don't want to get into a bunch of mods I am interested in reliability.
I did a compression test and got 105, which I think would explain my poblems, but one dealership said they got 115, which was not too good either and another dealership swears they got 128. I thought it was my gauge but it works fine on my sled and gives me the same reading as the dealership.
So I guess if the performance for these quads is normal for the way I described I need to know so I stop trying to figure it out. If not the only things I can come up with are either it needs a new top end or the clutch needs to be rebuilt (if so the dealership did not do what they said) or is there another possibility? Any opinions on this would be appreciated.
Thanks

98 XPLORER 400 HELP/OPINIONS
I have a stock '01 400 Xplorer and mine takes off like a bat out of he!! when I get on the gas. I've had mine up to 60 before and it didn't take long to accelerate to that speed. Something obviously doesn't sound right. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in. I've gotten a lot of great advice for my quad on here. Oh ya, welcome to the forum.

Stock, brand new it should do 60'ish (on the speedo).
Mine is '99 stock except for K&N filter, now does 55'ish and takes longer to get there, tired engine, original clutch. Also have replaced wear items of course, chain, sprockets, tires.
Something is wrong but it could be low compression or clutch. Is there a shop near by that could dyno your engine. That would eliminate the clutch. Should be in the 30hp range. If your getting 30hp then go after the clutches.
