700 sportsman carb or efi
I want to replace my 425 Xpepition, need more power. I want a 700 carb but all the dealers I talk to say get efi. I plan to use this atv for pulling and want to mod it out my self. I am 60 miles away from a dealer and don't want to haul it to them to have the map changed all the time. has anybody had both? Thanks Joe

I got a 2004.5 carb model really like it! The carb prob they had earlier 2002 models seems to have been fixed (sputtering/flat spot) mine RUNS GREAT! THEY HAD A RECALL / UPDATE ON THE EARIER MODELS ! A few of my friends say their carb update fixed the prob on theirs! Just got one buddy that has a EFI , he has not done any updates yet try & let you know when & what he does with the EFI model!

I have an 04 600 (carbed) and an 05 700 EFI. Just my opinion, but to me there's no comparison. I'd never go back to the carburator. Throttle response between the 2 is like night and day. The 700 has none of the "lag" that the 600 has. I'm like you VAP1507, I plow snow with these things all winter, and the 700 fires right up and is ready to go, while the 600 needs 20 minutes of hand-holding with the choke before it's warmed up enough to work.

I've also had my 425 since late 99. Rode it year round and found it just didn't rev out in winter like in the summer time. Jetting in the carb is likely the cause but was a pain to get at. My new 800 EFI is amazing. We’ve had some really cold nights (-21C) around here and the thing fires right up. I back out of the garage and the thing revs out right away. The EFI system is supposed to get better mileage and accommodates air intake and exhaust changes as well. I would go with EFI.

as a prev owner of both carb and EFI SP700s, without a doubt i prefer the EFI. i found the carb to consume so much fuel that the fuel gauge couldn't keep up! LOL! REALLY!
the 700 carb had to be the biggest PIG on gas ATV i had EVER owned! the 700EFI is very smooth, trouble-free, efficient, ect, ect.-= an excellent choice!
BUT, because you want to "mod it out" you may have some limitations being EFI. (if you want more power why not buy the 800EFI!LOL)

There's nothing wrong with a carb 700. I'm on my second one and have never had jetting issues...either cold temps or elevation. Although I will say my 05 starts better in cold temps than my 02, 05 takes about 20 seconds with choke on and about 2 minutes to warm up to ride. You really shouldn't jump on any machine at 5 degrees and take off right away, bad for engine. 02 took a couple minutes with choke and a few more to warm up to ride. I think they really have the carbed 700 dialed in good. I've run my 02 700 for 5 days at 6-7000 ft in elevation and ran really good. Also the efi is not alot faster, as a matter of fact a magazine ran them side by side and it was a matter of a tenth of a second and they said the carb wheelied much easier.

theres a night and day diff. between the 2 models. efi is the way to go, starts and runs easier as well theres a power diff. as well. besides from what i understand polaris getting rid of the carb model in a yr, so my dealer tells me. so it must be that efi is the way of all the future ones
