What kind of oil filter wrench do you use?
#1
Well I just changed the oil in my 05 700EFI for the first time and boy what a pain it was to get the oil filter off. First I tried using those rubber type straps. I have two and the big one was too thick to go on the back side of the filter and the little one I couldn't get enough leverage on it. So then I bought an adjustable wrench but it wouldn't go small enough. I wanted to get one of the actual cup types of a wrench but couldn't get one small enough. Went to my Polaris dealer and they said they use the cup type but don't know where they got it from and they didn't sell them. I ended up using one of the adjustable straps but it's far from ideal. I would like to get a an adjustable wrench for it or the one size small cup for it. Thanks.
this is the kind I used

Once you do your first oil change you should not have to use any type of wrench. It should not be that tight to have to use a wrench everytime. Just coat the gasket with oil and turn it till it is snug. It will not come off.

I agree w/ 2manytoys, but if you do happen to over-torque it, just use a screwdriver and hammer. Pound the screwdriver through and through the filter and use it to start unscrewing. Not exactly the prettiest way to do it, but it works everytime...

I'm not sure if any of you have seen the location of the oil filter on the 700efi
There's no possible way I could get a hammer in there or channel locks. It's a very poor setup . It has to be the worst vehicle I've ever had to change the oil on. There's no way to get any sorta grip on it. The setup on the 500 is way easier.

just becareful tring those methods, i know a guy that used a screwdriver @ first then the channlelocks because the driver didnt work and ended up ripping the can part of the filter off leaving the spin on part in place. had to have a garge cut it off. thats why you always coat your o ring w/ oil so it doesnt bake on. lol.

I always coat my oil filter seal with fresh oil. Maybe I'm not making any sense to you. My problem is that I have a 700 not a 500. Seems that most of the replies are from 500 owners and they are not the same setup. I can't fit my hand in there to get any leverage to twist it off. Putting it on isn't a problem I can use my hand and twist it but the location is so hard to get at I can't get any pressure on my hand to twist it off. All I was asking was if anyone uses an adjustable wrench for removing the filter and if so I'd like to know which one you use to fit the small filters.

well i have an 800 and just went to look at it and not sure if your 700 is in the same place as mine or not but i have plenty of room to use a strap wrench. i had the same problem on my vmax hard to get to and i had to use alot of strenth andcrushed the filter at the base of the filter to get it off w/ the strap wrench i borrowed from by buddy

yeah I'm pretty sure the 800 is the same setup
right now I use the strap (canvas type) and it works okay. I tried the rubber strap but it just wouldn't fit in there. I guess if I can't twist it off by hand I'll have to use the strap (canvas) wrench.
