if you are not going to race MX or jump big a lot, get the 4x4.

I have a 96 400 4x4 and have totally abused it! Has held up great for the use and abuse I have put it through, and the 4x4 comes in real handy in a lot of situations. I just finished putting a new piston in it, and have replaced the chains and sprockets and tires... thats all. Not bad for 10 years old with God knows how many hours on it. I do service it, change fluids and grease often, but that is not a big deal. I bought this when I was young and racing hairscrambles on bikes. Never raced the quad in actual race, but rode a lot of the same type trails with it.

In the snow, mud, hills with a lot of loose dirt or rock, the 4x4 really shines. I would not dare buy a quad without 4x4 for fun in snow, hills or mud.

good luck!

i'd get out sleds out too, but right now there's not enough to ride snowmobiles (happens more than once every year!!)
but too much for a 2x4. so it sounds like the 4x4 is the better choice. and i wont be jumping any big jumps

one more thing about the 400, ask if it has the stock piston, if it does rebuild it right away and put a wiesco piston in it. the stock ones are known to break the piston skirts( one of mine did it already....$1250 later it is fixed). putting a piston in it is really easy

catterman, to bad your not in my area. Im selling mine because the girlfreind wants a sportquad now. I spoiled her when she learned to ride my predator. I just put a ton of money into it to. I wish she would of told me before. I put new front axles, aarm bushings, air filter, starter, solenoid, battery, waterpump, rear shock, and just changed all the fluids, trans, counterbalance, coolant. Its still all stock.

If I was going to buy a scrammy it would be a 4x4. I have had no problems with the one I own. If I wanted a 2x4 I would get a Pred. or a outlaw becauce I think they would handle so much better.
my thought exactly
