scrambler 4x4 or 2x4?
if you are not going to race MX or jump big a lot, get the 4x4.
I have a 96 400 4x4 and have totally abused it! Has held up great for the use and abuse I have put it through, and the 4x4 comes in real handy in a lot of situations. I just finished putting a new piston in it, and have replaced the chains and sprockets and tires... thats all. Not bad for 10 years old with God knows how many hours on it. I do service it, change fluids and grease often, but that is not a big deal. I bought this when I was young and racing hairscrambles on bikes. Never raced the quad in actual race, but rode a lot of the same type trails with it.
In the snow, mud, hills with a lot of loose dirt or rock, the 4x4 really shines. I would not dare buy a quad without 4x4 for fun in snow, hills or mud.
good luck!

one more thing about the 400, ask if it has the stock piston, if it does rebuild it right away and put a wiesco piston in it. the stock ones are known to break the piston skirts( one of mine did it already....$1250 later it is fixed). putting a piston in it is really easy
