Sport 400 Front Sproket
#1
Does anyone know what the front sprocket size on the 99 Sport is? Whats a good size sprocket for the trails and wide open space? Whats the over all effect of a bigger front sprocket? If what ive heard is correct than it should be faster over all? What happens if its too big or is there such a thing?

stock gearing on the 99 was 13t on the front and 36t on the rear.going to big on the front srocket will get you more top speed but you will loose bottom end power.going up 1 tooth on the front is equal to going down 3 teeth on the rear sprocket.you could put a 14t on the front or drop the rear to a 34t,if you dont wanna loose all that much low end power id try the 34 tooth on the rear first and see how ya like it..

remember this tho,, it doesn't matter how big of a front you go because it is all effected by the clutch.another words, you can always tune the clutch to suit your needs, changing the sprokets on these autos will effect the clutch somewhat. In all my years on my 400,I never noticed more or less power or torque by changing 1 sproket size up.by going down to a 11 tooth one time, I noticed my clutch would over rev it's power curve. That could have been changed my installing heavy weights,it's the other way for more teeth up front,You might need lighter weights to pull the gear and really gain any top end.

Well i was looking for an all around improvement...as im not very good w/ gearing i didnt know if it was holding me back any. I think the next step is a bigger carb and porting tho thanks for the help.
PS: Yamma you should post some pics of your pred w/ out the rear plastic on it!
