I dont know about the belt but if you drive the atv slow it will warp the plastic clutch cover
and the primary clutch will rub and wear away the cover.
That might be what is causing the smoke.

That bike was a nice bike a few years ago. I can tell you that I
started it, it turned over just fine. It goes into Low gear but struggles
(belt/chain not driving) It'll catch for a little while, then loose it
and start smoking. The 4x4 worked as far as I could tell. It doesn't
want to catch at all In Reverse or High gear (grinds). The ignition is
torn apart, but it starts in a pull or two manually. I had it looked at
and they agreed it needed tranny work. Other than this I don't know.
Ignition, trans, and any part that would be melted or damaged by that
what would you think the problem is?

I dont know how but from my experience and other friends that have polaris' and the mechanic said that riding under around 15mph will make the cover warp.
Things to check for:Tire condition
4x4 drive system
Engine Condition
Body Condition

The body you need to look for cracks, how bad it is faded, pretty much how picky you are makes the difference.
on my 4x4 you can tell if the 4x4 is working by moving a sprocket and if all wheels turn
if the 4x4 button is engaged. You cant do that with yours though cause it is shaft driven. If it moves under its own power if the tranny isnt screwed up put it on jacks, turn the 4x4 on and see if four wheels turn.
