*Front Hub "Demand Drive" Help Needed*
#21
NEW NEWS ON MY JOURNEY TO FIXING MY DEMAND DRIVES!
I took it apart tonight and I noticed that I found small particles in the hub fluid when I drained it.. silver and black particles.... hmmmm bearings??
Then my buddy Todd called and he told me that my clutch(the hub) might be slipping.
So i turned the quad on and put it in AWD when it was jacked up on stands.. I didnt have the assembly on but I did put the bearings on and the clutch (rollers, cage, cam) and held it with my hands.. I could not stop the clutch form turning. I let the wheels stop and I put the assmebly on. Gased it up and the clutch wasnt even catching on the assmebly, nor giving me AWD.... So what do you think now?

Hi Zbart1 - you said

You stated before that you had the machine up on jacks, so now if I were you I would place the machine up in the air and
1. Place the shifter in low gear and turn off the AWD switch. Now start it and you should have both rear wheels rotating forward. Take a look at the drive shaft that turns the front hub it should be turning also as well as both front drive axles. You may see the tires turning in the front, but if you put your hand on them they should be easy to stop. If all this is turning move to the next step.
2. While the machine is still running turn on the AWD switch and observe the front tires they should BOTH start to turn and when you put your hand on them you should
Not be able to stop them.
--------------------------------------------------
OK I did all that [after the big job on the front end] and WOW when I got to push the 4WD button BOTH front wheels went "clunk" and engaged, so it seems the 4 WD on my ancient 1994 NoName Polaris does work
only problem was the strut insert bolts at top are badly rusted and shocks are totally gone AND anyway I cant afford the $250 each to buy new ones just now
so that means I have that nasty juddering up front if I try to go over say 40 mph, so I will just live with it for now
just good to have it back on the beach to anoy the treehuggers

Glad to hear you figured it out! Sorry to hear about the shock mounts, but with a good fab shop should be able to weld new strut mounts on and you will be good to go!!
Keep the shiny side up …………….or should I say down to me!
